Sensory Musical Interactive Learning Experience

Using Total Communication to enhance the lives of people with a learning difficulty

SMILE is for people who do not have the same complex communication abilities that most of us find so easy.

Most people using SMILE will have limited use of language and understanding which will often mean they lead isolated lives.

The skills and tools learnt in SMILE by carers enhance their understanding and shape their responses to the people  they support in relation to enabling choice making.

Communication happens in many different ways and is a basic human right.

SMILE sessions provide a space for interaction and communication in a fun way, using smell, touch, taste, sound and sight.  SMILE came into being by responding and listening to people’s needs and how they wanted their service.  It is primarily for adults with complex needs, learning difficulty and autism using a total communication approach but the model can easily be adapted and is also used with children.

We use music, rhythm, singing , interactive storytelling, songs and games, each session being structured to suit the people involved and led by them taking into account their likes and dislikes.

It is also about having FUN……….

History

SMILE has been running since 2002, originating at Redlands, North Cherwell Day Service and has been successfully developed in other day services in Oxfordshire and Warwickshire.

Sessions are themed seasonally enabling experiences taken for granted in everyday life to be shared.

My name is Celia Chasey and I set up the SMILE project whilst employed by OCC.  I have 24 years experience working with adults with PMLD and autism.   I now run SMILE independently providing a package which includes training staff to run sessions in their own venue, in day centres and residential homes.

I also run sessions for children as part of a holiday scheme or I can tailor sessions to suit your individual needs.  Please contact me for further information.
